Shopping in Iceland can be a fun and interesting experience full of unique products and merchandise, including handknit clothing, bath and beauty products, and foods.

Traditional Icelandic souvenirs can be found almost anywhere in this Northern European country- from high street shopping in Reykjavik and local country stores, to flea markets and last minute duty free shopping at international airports. While typical vacation souvenir items such as postcards, mugs, and t-shirts are widely available, Iceland has traditional gifts and wares that make ideal purchases from this unique and modern country.

Visitors to Iceland are able to receive VAT tax refunds on purchase of over 4000 Icelandic Kronur (ISK). With receipts from Icelandic shops, refunds can be attained from international airports or abroad, in either cash or credit card refund. Look for the tax free logo when shopping in Iceland.

Traditional Icelandic Wool Sweaters and Knit Goods

Woolen products are everywhere in Iceland due to the large amount of sheep present in the country. World renowned for quality and warmth, Icelandic wool is tough enough to stave off the harsh winters in this northern country, located slightly below the Arctic Circle. Woolen articles of clothing are ideal in Iceland, especially outside of the summer months. Woolen clothing is not only warm, but also virtually waterproof as the wool wicks moisture away from the body, keeping the wearer dry.

The most traditional of souvenirs is an Icelandic sweater, readily available at both high end shops and tourist gift shops. The Icelandic sweater or Lopapeysa is recognized by its yoke design. The yoke, or decorative collar lining the neck opening, comes in many colours, both traditional and more modern brightly coloured wool, especially found in children's sweaters. This traditional yoke pattern is also echoed in other knit goods from long sweater jackets, vest, cardigans, dresses, tableware, bottle covers, and even miniature sweaters for dogs.

Other common woolen items include hats, gloves, scarves, and socks which all make great Icelandic gifts. Hand knit wool products can be found virtually everywhere in Iceland. The Handknitting Association of Iceland carries a wide variety of products and styles, including a large variety knitting wool and knitting patterns.

Blue Lagoon Bath and Body Products

As one of the top tourist attractions in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is home to its own line of body and skincare products. These products are made with natural minerals, algae, and silica that are prevalent in the waters of the Blue Lagoon. The minerals in the Blue Lagoon products are utilized for their remineralizing and revitalizing effects, while algae is recognized for it's anti-aging effects as it works to stimulate collagen production in the skin. The addition of silica treats skin conditions through exfoliation and deep-cleaning.

Popular products include the Silica Mud Mask, Mineral Moisturizing Cream, and a separate product line which targets anti-aging. The Blue Lagoon line of products can be purchased at the Lagoon shop at the Blue Lagoon, retail shops around Iceland, and at Keflavik Airport which also offers massages and body treatments pre-flight. Be sure to check with the salesperson before purchasing, as not all items are allowed as carry-on with connecting flights through the United States. Icelandair has a selection of Blue Lagoon items for sale from the on board duty free.

Icelandic Foods and Delicacies

Icelanders love their food. Delicious Icelandic food items are easy to purchase and transport back home at the end of a trip. Since fish and seafood are a large part of the Icelandic diet, many fish products are available dried or smoked and packaged for easy transportation. Aside from traditional food shops, grocery stores, and markets, Keflavik Airport has a small grocery store carrying popular items for the trip home. Chocolate covered black licorice is a popular snack providing a delicate mix of salty and sweet.

Icelanders are famous for their love of hot dogs. These delicious dogs- found everywhere from gas station to curbside stalls- come topped with typical toppings such as ketchup and mustard, as well as uniquely Icelandic crunchy dried onions and zingy remoulade. These tasty toppings are available for purchase enabling travelers to recreate appetizing Icelandic hot dogs at home.
